Keralan Fish Curry


  • 4 Haddock Fillets
  • 2 tsp of turmeric powder
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 Large onion finely chopped
  • 1tsp black mustard seeds
  • 5-8 curry leaves
  • Root ginger finely chopped
  • 2 tsp tamarind paste
  • 200ml coconut mil
  • 100ml fish stock
  • 2 spring onions finely chopped
  • 2 red chilli Finely chopped
  • Rice and coriander leaves to serve


  1. In a bowl place the haddock and sprinkle with turmeric powder and season with salt and pepper
  2. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the black mustard seeds, onion and curry leaves – fry for 10 minutes until onions are brown
  3. add the ginger and cook for another 1-2 minutes, then add the tamarind paste, coconut milk and stock and stir well. heat the sauce to a simmer
  4. add the fish and simmer gently for 5 minutes. String in the spring onions and chilli and keep covered for another 15 minutes
  5. Serve with rice and sprinkled coriander leaves.
